It is important to know how and why you should install a firewall with the onslaught of computer hackers, spammers, and viruses that are prevalent around the Internet. Between your computer and data that is entering it, this is your first line of defense. With one, you can avoid dangerous attacks that can wipe out your data or steal personal information.

The firewalls available vary widely and you must determine which type is suitable for your computer. Chances are that your firewall is already set up and ready to be used if you have a computer that came installed with the Microsoft XP or Vista operating system.

It is no good if it is turned off or not working properly. You need to purchase your own software if you do not have one of these later operating systems. Since the XP version doesn’t get great reviews, you may still want to purchase separate firewall software if you have Microsoft XP.

The most popular products available are Norton, AVG and McAfee and you can either visit a store that sells computer software or download a firewall product through the Internet. Even from the leading companies, there are plenty of low cost versions available, with prices varying according to the sophistication of the software.

Before your firewall is installed, a few things must be taken into account. These programs can block certain functions that you need, so you must configure it to allow those, such as file and printing sharing. The documentation provided allows the settings to be configured during installation or at a later date.

Firewalls tend to stop you from going to certain parts of the Internet as well. You should be aware how you connect as this may happen if you use a local area network or a router. Accessing secured networks when you have installed a firewall is difficult. Installing a firewall to a pc linked to a company network may require a specific settings configuration to allow you to connect to them and this can be provided by a company’s IT department.
