Do Not Believe The Misconceptions About Hypnosis

Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in misconceptions. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t regard them to be serious scientific pursuits. Given below are some common beliefs associated with hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. Even people who have observed hypnosis on others mostly refuse to believe in it. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not exhibiting enough mental strength to block the effect of their words. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying hard to avoid the spell.

Another false belief about hypnosis that people have invented arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely aware of the goings on around him. That individual is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive suggestions easily.

Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without acknowledging individual differences in character and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and clicks only if there are different methodologies for different characters.

Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and usually has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. The person doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, on the other hand hypnosis is not possible without communication.

It is often thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in appearance or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. But it can bring about a development in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a richer and fulfilling life, and therefore one must not pay heed to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an unbiased mind.
