What Is Arthritis?

Filed under: Home — Guest Author @ 9:00 am

If you are experiencing arthritis or somebody you know does, you can understand how incapacitating this condition can be. My mother’s hands became crooked and snarled due to arthritis and constant use. She stitched, tinted, and created every kinds of art in her entire life, even though it was tough and excruciating in her later years.

Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints causing discomfort. Numerous kinds of arthritis are as follows, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, infectious arthritis and juvenile arthritis. The two that we will be discussing here are rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis starts with the inflammation and pain in the joints, exhaustion, anemia, weight loss and even fever and its manifestations are deformity, hardness and partial immobility thus termed as the ‘crippler’. In rheumatoid arthritis, the hardness of the joint happens as you wake up and may remain for an hour or more and the particular finger or wrist may swell. Rheumatoid arthritis will generally start with soreness and hardness of a single joint of a finger, hind, wrist or knee, involving all joints surrounded by a synovia-secreting membrane. There is soreness on the joints when the body’s defense system erroneously recognizes something as a threat and attacks it. This is what happens to this kind of arthritis, a disorder of the body’s defense system. Rheumatoid arthritis differs from osteoarthritis from the sounds their joints make. This is just one of their dissimilarities. In rheumatoid arthritis, the sounds on the joints are like scrunching cellophane. In osteoarthritis, the sound of the joints has the propensity to produce more of a bursting or breaking sound.

Individual joints are affected by osteoarthritis, stiffening and hurting when they move, usually advances slowly. Inflammation does not typically happen during the beginning stages of osteoarthritis. Nevertheless, in the final phase, swelling, enlargement of the joint and muscle contractures can happen, including the deterioration of the cartilage that envelopes the end of the bones. It is a degenerative disease relative to aging and use through time. This is the kind my mother had. Initially it was her index finger until it affected her whole hand.

From an extremely ballpark figure of 43 million American adults already suffering with some kind of arthritis, it could climb to 63 million by the year 2030. Maybe your reading this indicates you too have it.

If you think that you are suffering from arthritis, ask your physician to decide the system of treatment that suits you. Diet and exercise is considered a significant part in controlling arthritis. You can further converse with your medical doctor on the selection to pain control with the likes of painkiller gels or gel packs, heat therapy systems (the paraffin heat system is amazing – I can say because I’ve tried it myself), T.E.N.S. units (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or other nerve stimulators, and in the case of osteoarthritis, back braces, to assist in alleviating and controlling the pain.

Do not lose hope. These days, with the advancement of technology and specialization of the medical profession, you will definitely get the medical attention you need.

Getting pains in the joints is a very distressing experience. You should get roll on pain relief items in case you’re encountering these types of instances. At Safe Home, you can select from a variety of pain relief products.

Heating and Plumbing

In recent years storage heaters have made great advances in efficiency and control technology. The principle of storage heater is that a heavy mass core is heated overnight using cheap rate electricity. This core is made of a high density Iron Oxide compound that gives up heat very gradually. During the day different levels of heat can be achieved by adjustment of the output controls. All heaters now have integral adjustable electronic room thermostats. More advanced intelligent controls now mean that heating a building using storage heaters, exceeds Part L of the building regulations for energy efficiency and controllability.

Typically heat is recovered from the flue gases; the water vapour in the exhausts gases is cooled by the incoming air, thus causing the vapour to form into a liquid state, hence the term condensing. Condensing boilers tend to work at their highest efficiency at lower temperatures so boilers are often designed to feature fully modulating operation at low temperatures, ensuring the output matches very closely to the heat demand.

Most natural gas boilers are suitable for Propane LPG fuel options and require only a change of burner nozzle. Many boilers are now able to run in conjunction with solar panels where gas forms the secondary top up, heat source. Solar smart combi boilers are now being produced by many boiler manufacturers. Other new features available are economisers, or top box gas savers, where even more heat is recovered from flue gases by incorporation of a secondary heat exchanger.

Electric under floor heating is extremely popular in modern apartment blocks where stone, tiled and limestone floors can be maintained at very comfortable temperature. The under floor heating elements tend to be installed in the form of heat-mats whereby the mat forms a continuous heating element. The heat provided is a radiant heat and thus creates very few convection air currents or draughts. The whole electric under floor heating system is controlled by room thermostats.

Fluing technology has advanced significantly in recent years with telescopic and concentric flues, which have made the heating installer’s life much easier. Many vertical flues tend to be open flues with most wall mounted boilers having horizontal room sealed flues. Flue fittings are available in many configurations for the differing circumstances of each boiler installation. Gases leave high efficiency boilers at lower temperatures, which can cause condensation problems on nearby windows for example. Plume management then becomes an issue and plume management kits and accessories are available.

Top 5 Products to Make Your Bathroom Baby Proof

Filed under: Home — Guest Author @ 8:07 am

Becoming a parent for the first time is a scary, yet amazing experience. The sense of wonder you feel when first looking at your newborn is quickly overtaken by an overwhelming feeling of responsibility. When your child is so small and vulnerable it is understandable to become focused on keeping them safe. One of the most hazardous rooms in the home for small children is the bathroom. There are a few simple things you can do to prevent injury but still keep the room easily usable by other people in the home.

Door

Start be installing a hook and eye latch on the outside of the bathroom door. Make sure it is high enough so that the child cannot reach it but low enough to be easily accessible to older children who may be in the home. Around four feet would be ideal. As your child begins to crawl and pull themselves up to a standing position, you will have peace of mind knowing the bathroom is not within their reach.

Toilet

Often children like to follow parents around the home, even while they are engaged in personal hygiene activities, such as brushing teeth. And no matter how diligent we try to be, forgetting to latch the bathroom door closed will happen at least once. Therefore it is necessary to safeguard your child from injury in the bathroom, as well as out.

The toilet is the most appropriate place to start. There are many items on the market designed to prevent children from getting into the toilet, but possibly the most effective is the latch. Most baby equipment supply stores carry toilet latches. It comes in two parts, one that sticks on to the bowl of the toilet and the other to the lid, and has a latch attached – similar to a seat belt mechanism. The latch is easily opened and closed by older children, but toddlers do not have the dexterity or strength to open the latch themselves.

Drawers and Cupboards

Learning to open drawers and cupboards will become a fascinating activity for your toddler. As they open a cupboard door, the child sees a whole new world magically appear before them! It is natural for them to want to explore all the wonderful things in the storage spaces they discover. Toilet paper, cleaning supplies, shampoo and toothpaste are some of the items your child will want to get into and it is your job as a parent to prevent them from wreaking havoc.

The solution is simple. Many comprehensive drug stores and department stores carry drawer and cupboard hook latches. For example, the stopper side of the device attaches to the inside frame of the cupboard and the hook portion attaches to the door. Each time an adult wishes to get into the cupboard they simply pull the door open just enough for a finger to reach in and push the hook down and out of the stopper. The same type mechanism can be used on drawers. Older children can easily use the latches, but once again the strength and dexterity required to bypass the lock is not possible for most toddlers.

Locked Medicine Box or Cabinet

Many families choose to keep their medical supplies and medicines in the bathroom. While this is convenient, it can also be dangerous to toddlers and even older children who do not understand the inherent danger of unsupervised medicine use.

The best solution to keep your children out of harms way is to lock up the medications and medical supplies. There are many different options available. Some people choose a portable lock box to store harmful items, others choose a safe. Still others choose to attach a lock to their wall mounted medicine cabinet. Esthetically, this may not be the best choice but it will certainly keep toddlers out of trouble.

Portable lock boxes offer the flexibility of moving from room to room and changing storage locations. Bringing the whole medicine box to a sick person’s bedside is certainly more practical than going back and forth between a wall mounted medicine cabinet and the sick bed. Just as long as the box is kept locked and out of reach, your toddler will be safe.

Bathtub

The bathtub is a serious danger to toddlers for many reasons, the most obvious being drowning. Most families do not keep their bathtub full of water all the time, but if someone is running a bath and leaves the bathroom for a moment, it would be very easy for a toddler to lean over the side of the tub and fall in. Even if there is no water in the tub, a child can easily fall in the tub and bang their head.

The ideal solution is to prevent injury but also maintain accessibility to the tub for other members of the family. An easy fix may be to purchase an adjustable bed rail. The rail can be attached either to the tub itself or compression fitted to either side of the tub surround. Adults and older children are still able to step over the bed rail, but small children cannot fall into danger.

Many parents begin baby proofing the home during the last trimester of pregnancy, and still others wait until their infant becomes mobile. Enjoy the toddler years with your children, as they go by very quickly. But have peace of mind at the same time by knowing you have put proper safeguards in place to protect your little one.

Are You Currently Secure Within Your Bathroom?

Filed under: Home — Guest Author @ 8:14 am

OMG! Your daily routine of flushing the toilet may seem harmless to you but it’s not! Tiny microbes are emitted into the air every time you pull that lever, do you know that?

In fact, in 1975, an experiment was performed based on what is presently called the ‘aerosol effect’ Charles Gerba, an environmental microbiologist in the University of Arizona, published an article on the bacterial and viral aerosols that are thrust into the air from flushing the toilet. Gerba, commenting on photos taken of bacteria from flushing the toilet says it looked like, “Baghdad at night during a U.S. attack,” and “Droplets are going all over the place – it’s like the Fourth of July.” He conducted tests by placing pieces of gauze in different locations around the bathroom and measuring the bacterial and viral levels on them after a toilet flush. He additionally noted that microbial matter was still floating around the bathroom after two hours!

Every part of the bathroom is affected with the contamination, even a simple toothbrush on a sink can’t escape its infection.

As it goes, our mothers were telling the truth! Here in the South, we little ladies were educated by our mothers that under no circumstances are we going to use our hands in flushing the toilet, nor sit on the toilet seat. I don’t know about the others. If I can properly recollect, we were instructed to use our foot instead. Now that was a very horrible proposal judging from the thought of it, you’ll still get contaminated not by the toilet but from the floor as well, since the floor is where microbial matters disperse after the flush. Although to my surprise, toilet seats were the least infected area due to its drier setting. On the other hand, areas under the toilet seat still remains contaminated because of its humid setting.

Researches shockingly revealed that sinks were the most contaminated sections in the bathroom. The reason for this is that their wet surface attracts bacteria proliferation after microorganisms transferred from the bowl. Partly to blame is the fact that toilet bowls get more cleaning attention than bathroom sinks. My husband thinks I am germ phobic – but I think he will change his mind after he reads this article! After investigating on this issue, I actually thought of wearing a protective clothing to isolate myself from the environment, and promised myself by no means will I end up inside a public toilet. Then again, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen in the real world. How public restrooms are maintained that we have no control over, but in our house, we can establish some level of protection. Then again, let’s be serious, the findings are true and these microorganisms – strep, staph, Hepatitis A, E. coli, shingella bacteria, are present in every bathroom, may it be in a public place or in the privacy of your home.

There are many things you can do to lessen the chances of getting infected with disease-causing microorganisms in the bathroom. One option, before flushing the toilet, you may want to put down the lid first to limit area of contamination. Next, when you are done flushing, thoroughly wash your hands with bacterial soap. If you are in a public bathroom, you can open the door or window and turn off the faucets to prevent recontamination. This is actually what research recommended and not by my paranoid self. For your sake, change your toothbrush! When you do, avoid exposing it inside the bathroom by keeping it in an enclosed shelf. Make certain to maintain the cleanliness of your bathroom by using antiseptics.

Keeping these simple pointers in mind will help you control the spread of disease-causing microorganisms in your home thus achieving a healthier environment for you and your family.

If you want to be sure that your bathroom is safe against any of unsafe things, guarantee bathroom safety with bathroom safety products at Safe Home Products.
