Chiefs’ Cassel May Not Be Ready For NFL Opening Game

Filed under: Sport — Guest Author @ 7:06 am

The good news for the Kansas City Chiefs as they prepare for the start of the NFL regular season is that their starting quarterback is back at practice. The bad news is that they still don’t know when hell be able to play. Matt Cassel returned to the Chiefs practice field on Monday for the first time since he injured his left knee in a NFL preseason game on August 29th. Still, there’s been no confirmation from either he or the team as to when hell return to action. It would be an ironic twist if Cassel lost significant time due to injury, as it was a knee injury to Tom Brady while in New England that first brought him mainstream attention

Cassel, who saw his stock shoot up precipitously as an NFL QB following his solid play in New England after starter Tom Brady went down to a season ending injury, signed a six year, $28 million contract with the Chiefs in the off season. Although Cassel was in full uniform at Mondays practice, head coach Todd Haley was noncommittal about whether he or Brodie Croyle would start Sundays NFL regular season opener on the road against the Baltimore Ravens:

“I think that as the week goes on, we’ll know a little bit more. We’ll know a little bit more with Matt for sure. But it was good that he was out there. He was able to get through some things. As the week goes on a little further, we’ll know a little more as far as where he’s at.”

“It’s good this is a long week. That will help with anybody who’s nicked up. I would say generally you would need to have a full practice to have a chance to play. Generally, you need to have a full Friday practice to have a chance.”

With or without Cassel, the Chiefs offense sputtered in the preseason scoring only two touchdowns. The lack of productivity cost offensive coordinator Chan Gailey his job and Kansas City stumbled to a 0-4 record in their NFL exhibition contests. Haley has taken over the offensive play calling for the time being, though it made no difference in the Chiefs final preseason game. Neither Croyle nor third stringer Tyler Thigpen was particularly sharp in preseason play, though Croyle got the most work and should get the nod on Sunday if Cassell is unable to play.

The Chiefs face a tough assignment as they get the 2009 NFL regular season underway, pitted against the defensive tenacity of the Baltimore Ravens on the road. The Chiefs will host the Oakland Raiders in week 2 of the NFL season before traveling to Philadelphia on September 27 for a game against the Eagles.

Falcons Throttle 49ers

Filed under: Sport — Guest Author @ 7:12 am

It’s obvious that the San Francisco 49ers are heading in the right direction under Mike Singletary, but you couldn’t tell by watching their game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Falcons scored six touchdowns against the Niners, with running back Michael Turner accounting for three of the scores as Atlanta routed San Francisco by a lopsided 45-10 final score. It was the Niners’ worst defeat since a 41-0 loss back in 2006 under former coach Mike Nolan. San Francisco fell to 3-2 with the defeat while the Falcons improved to 3-1.

The NFL betting lines had the game listed as a ‘PICK’, giving the Falcons the ATS win with their easy straight up victory. It was the 49ers first loss against the spread this season, while Atlanta upped their record to 3-1 to the money. The combined 55 points went OVER the posted total of 39′. It was San Francisco’s second OVER of the year in five games, while Atlanta has split their NFL totals with a 2-2 mark.

After the game, the fiery Singletary apologized for cussing out former 49er and current Falcons’ lineman Harvey Dahl:

“I’ll put it this way: I wish I had more coaching etiquette. I don’t. I love my players and when someone responds about my players in a particular way, I may do some things I shouldn’t do. I have to get better at those things as time goes on. Even though the player was talking to me, I should not have said what I said. It wasn’t anything bad, it was just something that shouldn’t have happened.”

Roddy White set a Falcons’ record with 210 receiving yards, and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on his second touchdown of the day. With his team in full control, Atlanta coach Mike Smith had to be amused:

“He didn’t hit the landing because if he hits the landing it’s not a 15-yard penalty. I told him if he’s going to do it, it needs to be Olga Korbut. And he looked at me like he doesn’t know who Olga Korbut is. Then I told him, ‘Well, maybe Mary Lou Retton.’ And then I figure that’s ’86, he doesn’t know who Mary Lou Retton is. It went right over his head and my head.”

Smith admitted that he hadn’t been in top form so far this season:

“I felt like I haven’t been playing well up to this point in the season. Me and coach Smith had a talk. He was like, ‘You gotta get back to being yourself again. You gotta go out there and be the old Roddy. No pressure. Just go out there and play.’”

The Falcons will return home on Sunday to host the Chicago Bears, with Atlanta a -3 home favorite and the total set at 45′. They’ll play their next two on the road, traveling to Texas for a game against the Dallas Cowboys the following week and to New Orleans to face the Saints on Monday, November 2. The 49ers will have a bye this week before traveling to Houston to play the Texans on October 25.

Enhancing Family Ties By Playing Different Games

Filed under: Sport — Guest Author @ 7:01 am

One always wants to be a part of a closely knit family. A family is what supports you emotionally in happiness and in bad. However, these days, the family ties are not observed to be very strengthened. The corporate life has negatively affected the family attachment. You might have given the best luxuries to your kid, but what is more essential than everything, is love. You might have a room filled with game room furniture and a billiard table with billiard balls on it, but no one to play with it. Of course, this would disrupt you emotionally. What may be the cause of such a gap and how it is to be erased?

You might remember giving your kid his first lesson of baseball. The reality is that games adjoins you together as a family and as a friend. You should play games like this with your children in the backyard. It is always easy to do this with kids and even young tweens. The tough part of the game is to manage the teens. Your teens might not be very interested in playing the backyard games with you anymore. Neither would they enjoy a family picnic because it may seem boring to them. However, keep trying hard. You do know what their most liked sport is, try playing that. If you are not an expert at playing a particular sport, request them to teach you.

Computer games may also be a good way of nice family attachment. On weekends, try to spend a little time with your young children to teach them to play a few computer games. Play stations are an even better option of playing games like these. You and your kid can play endlessly on that. It might be probable that you are not quite an expert at playing these games primarily; again you can ask your child to teach you. This is another way to nourish the teen-bond with you.

Board games have been the oldest modes of improving family ties. There is a wide spectrum of board games that you can enjoy with your family. Your children may be fed of playing monopoly with their friends, try to show them a more complex game that they will want to learn. Checkers and chess may be a great idea. Your children might not like them initially and you will have to play poor deliberately, so that they win and become more interested in playing them. Once they get to know the game well, it will be a great idea to play it every night after dinner. This is how you can form a routine to spend a little more time with your children.

Family vacations is also a great mode to maintain family ties. You may have a particular picnic point where you and your children loved to be at. Now that they might not stand in the same age group, it is a good option to change the location. Go for a site that has more interesting activities and exploration chances. Your life may not be so hectic after all! And your family is the most valued possession. Try hard with easy steps to maintain a good relation and enjoy a superb life!

Connor Sullivan recently looked into purchasing game room furniture for a basement he just finished. He also looked into ordering billiard balls online for an old pool table he inherited from a family member.

College Football Flashback: 2008 SEC Championship Game

Filed under: Sport — Guest Author @ 7:04 am

The Florida Gators would go on to win the NCAA Football Championship, but it was a 31-20 victory over #1 ranked Alabama in the SEC championship game that got them there. The Gators scored– 4th quarter points to secure victory in a contest that was an epic struggle for three quarters with five lead changes and two ties.

The Gators struck first, taking a 7-0 lead on a three yard Tim Tebow TD pass to Carl Moore. The Crimson Tide quickly counterpunched, tying the score on an eighteen yard run by Glen Coffee and taking their first lead of the game at 10-7 several minutes later on a 30 yard FG by Leigh Tiffin. Florida responded in the second quarter, tying the game on a Jonathan Phillips’ yard FG and taking a 17-10 lead into the halftime break on another Tebow TD pass, this one to David Nelson from five yards out. Alabama regained the momentum in the third quarter, tying the score on a 2 yard Mark Ingram touchdown run and then regaining the lead at 20-17 in the final seconds of the period on another Tiffin field goal. Florida put them down for the count in the fourth, however, on a 1 yard Jeffrey Demps TD run followed by Tebows third touchdown strike of the day.

Junior quarterback Tim Tebow was the big star for the Gators. The junior QB had 216 yards passing with 3 TDs and no interceptions plus fifty seven yards on the ground. Florida head coach Urban Meyer praised Tebow effusively in his post game comments:

“I’ve had some great players, and I’ve got some great players on this team. But I’ve never had one like this. Tim’s got something special inside him. I’m not talking about throwing. I’m not talking about running. I’m talking about making everyone around him better. That fourth quarter was vintage Tim Tebow.

Alabama coach Nick Saban agreed:

“He’s a great competitor. He takes his teammates on his shoulders a lot. They have a lot of confidence he’s going to make plays, and they play that way. They scored two touchdowns where we had them covered about as well as we could cover them.”

The conventional wisdom is that the Gators are a speed and finesse team, but according to cornerback Joe Haden the world has underestimated their toughness:

“Our team is a tough team. The only reason they look past our toughness is our speed. They said we were a speed team and they were a tough team. We’re just as tough. We can still be pretty and fast and tough at the same time.”

While Crimson Tide fans were no doubt disappointed by their late season loss, some perspective is necessary: the team was only two years removed from a 6-7 record in their last year under Mike Shula. In only two years at the helm, Nick Saban has amassed a’-7 record at Alabama with no signs of slowing down.
